Bill Daly and the Dynamic Duo:
Apogee’s PSX-100 & the Cedar DNS-1000

by Sean McArthur

Bill Daly’s experience as an audio professional is as diverse and impressive as his credits. Whether it’s live engineering for Willie Nelson, Bernadette Peters and Shaggy, providing sound systems for The Golden Globes, Jeopardy and Survivor or, sound design for live theater productions of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Oklahoma and Bye, Bye Birdie, Bill Daly has 31 years of audio know-how that makes him a superior listener.

Central to Bill’s long list of capabilities is the audio systems design that he does for Burbank based, ProMix, Electrotec. ProMix specializes in the rental, design and installation of high-end audio systems. Apogee caught up with Bill on his rounds at a major L.A. studio where he was delivering two PSX-100 SEs for use in conjunction with a pair of Cedar DNS-1000s.

You only hear what you want to hear.
In a broadcast or post production environment the manipulation of desired sounds and noise (wanted or unwanted) is critical. "The hot package – the 'A' system is using the Cedars with the PSX-100”, says Daly. The Cedar DNS-1000 (dynamic noise suppressor) is the unit of choice for the task. In fact, the DNS-1000 is so powerful that when maxed out, “it can suck all of the noise and air out of the room,” Daly remarks.

This allows the mixer to create an ambience that subtly reduces noise to such a degree that it forms an unbelievable sonic atmosphere. But, because the DNS-1000 is a digital interface, performing at its peak requires a world-class AD converter, and Bill always recommends the PSX-100. “The Cedars are very high-end units, why would you compromise their capabilities with an inferior AD converter.” Daly says that on several occasions he has had to replace other converters with the PSX-100 because audio pros were dissatisfied with the results.

“What I am recommending now for TV is two Cedar/Apogee setups
for the production mixer; one on dialog, the other on audience response mics, and an additional rig at FOH (front of house) for the P.A. mixer. This reduces the ambience that’s accumulated as a result of P.A. gain and increasing stage noises (fans, motors, ventilation, moving lights, etc). This setup also enables the P.A. mixer to achieve higher gain without impacting the broadcast sound, and allows the air mixer to duck around the mechanical noises of the stage environment while pulling a few dB out of the P.A. with no noticeable artifacts.”

The sonic synergy of the PSX-100 and the DNS-1000 goes far beyond utility. This pairing brings an ease of use and a power and accuracy to managing the sound dynamics of live broadcast and post production that audio pros are demanding and that’s ok with Bill Daly. “I wouldn’t recommend any other combo.”

Bill Daly lives on the big island of Hawaii and frequently commutes to L.A. where he works as a systems designer in television for ProMix, and as an engineer on remote productions of Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune and Survivor. Bill also runs his own production solutions company, Solar Sound Service in Hawaii.
