Santa Monica Twilight Concert – JD McPherson
Recorded with Apogee Symphony I/O
The 31st Annual Twilight Concert Series on the Santa Monica Pier continued on July 30, 2015 with JD McPherson. The audio from the performance was captured using Apogee’s flagship Symphony I/O audio interface and mic preamps. 64 inputs were split three ways from the stage – one to front of house, one to monitors, one to the recording rig. The recording rig channels were connected to the inputs of Apogee’s Symphony I/O, boosted to line level using the built-in mic preamps and converted from analog to digital using Apogee’s legendary AD conversion. The Symphony I/O was connected to a Pro Tools HD native Thunderbolt audio interface, allowing those 64 channels to get to a MacBook Pro laptop via a single Thunderbolt cable and recorded with Pro Tools software with near zero latency. This state of the art recording rig is truly one of a kind, as this sort of live scenario would have previously required a considerable amount of audio equipment occupying a large footprint near the stage or an on-site recording truck.
